It was a sunny day in the fall of 2002, and the autumn leaves were in full color. This called for a road trip in my art car! And since I'd been wanting to meet artist Steve Heller, who makes sculptures and furniture out of car body parts, Jillian and I decided to make his gallery in the Catskills Mountains our destination.
From our hometown of Rye, New York, we drove west to the mighty Tappan Zee Bridge, gazing south at the Manhattan skyline in the distance as we crossed over the Hudson River. After that, our course was roughly north along the river. We took country roads and scenic detours, waving to bemused citizens in the streets of small towns, and crossing bridges not quite so ambitious as the Tappan Zee. The blue of the car looked nice against the orange and yellow leaves.
